Understanding ELO Mathematics
The Elo rating system is a method for calculating the relative skill levels of players or teams in competitor-versus-competitor games. The difference in the ratings between two opponents serves as a predictor of the outcome of a match.
How are ELO ratings updated after a match?
The ELO update formula is: R_new = R_old + K * (Actual - Expected). Where R is the rating, K is the weight constant (K-factor), Actual is the score (1 for win, 0.5 for draw, 0 for loss), and Expected is the calculated win probability.
What K-factor should I use for soccer/tennis?
Standard soccer ratings use K=32 for normal friendlies, K=40 for qualifiers/league games, and K=60 for major tournament matches (like the World Cup knockout rounds). In tennis, K-factors typically range between 24 and 32 depending on event status.
